Getting Around Guanacaste: Transportation Made Easy 🚗✈️

Let’s talk about navigating Costa Rica!

Getting around Guanacaste doesn’t have to be complicated, but there are a few insider tips I want to share:

Airport Transfers First things first – getting from Liberia Airport to your resort:

  • Private transfers are my top recommendation ($80-100 each way for 1-4 people)
    • Driver waiting with your name on a sign
    • Air-conditioned, newer vehicles
    • Flexible timing if your flight changes
    • Often includes a quick convenience store stop for snacks/drinks
  • Shared shuttles are budget-friendly ($25-40 per person each way)
    • May wait for other flights to arrive
    • Multiple hotel drop-offs
    • Set schedules
  • Resort transfers are convenient but pricier
    • Some resorts offer their own airport pick-up services
    • Usually $100-150 round-trip per person
    • Often in nicer vehicles with cold towels, drinks
  • Rental cars give you freedom but come with challenges
    • Driving is adventurous (think rough roads, few street signs)
    • Mandatory insurance makes the actual cost 2-3x the quoted rate
    • Parking at resorts often costs $15-25/day
    • Great if you plan to explore independently

Getting Around During Your Stay: If you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort:

  • Resort shuttles for nearby attractions (often free or minimal charge)
  • Excursion transportation usually included in tour prices
  • Taxis readily available at resorts ($15-30 for nearby destinations)
  • Ride apps like Uber work in some areas but aren’t as reliable as in the US

Beach-Hopping Tips:

  • Water taxis connect some beaches (Tamarindo → Playa Conchal is a popular route)
  • Some beaches have limited parking, so going with a guide/driver can reduce stress
  • Many pristine beaches have zero facilities, so bring everything you need!

My Recommendation:

For most travelers staying at all-inclusive resorts in Guanacaste, I suggest:

  1. Pre-arranged private airport transfers
  2. Excursions with included transportation
  3. Occasional taxis for dining or exploring outside the resort

This gives you the perfect balance of convenience and value without the stress of navigating or parking.

Let me know if you’d like me to arrange your airport transfers! I work with a fantastic company that’s reliable, professional, and their drivers are full of great local information.

P.S. If you DO decide to rent a car, ask me for directions in advance. Google Maps works for main roads but can send you on some wild adventures for shortcuts!
